One of those days...

Thursday was a busy day for us.

With the help of our vet at Family Pet Care, we found a trainer for Addie and her first lesson was yesterday at 6 p.m.

No, this isn't Addie. I was too focus on the lesson to mess with the camera. Our trainer is Matt Marcum. He has 12 years of experience in training everything from agility,  to police dogs, to hunting dogs, etc. Addie did great in her first lesson with him.

If you are a follower of our blog, you are probably wondering why we have moved to a personal trainer for our dog. Addie has been in some form of training class the majority of her young life. From puppy class to beginner obedience then to an additional beginner obedience at a difference training center. All focused on using the pinch collar yet the second that pinch collar comes she immediately stops listening to us. So we called in the big guns. No more pinch collar. Mr. Marcum's approach is much different than any other trainer that I have experienced before. He looks at the dogs behavior instead of dishing out the choking. We could not be happier with our first lesson. If you like to read, he recommends A Dog's Mind by Bruce Fogle. He stated that even though it is an older book, he has not found a better book than this about understanding your dogs behavior. I have ordered it. A book that I am already reading recommended by the trainer at Family Pet Care is The Other End of the Leash. This is a really good book and I would recommend giving it a look.

Then it was off to puppy class with Hailey. This is a time for Hailey to socialize with pups and humans. We were a little late due to Addie's class. When we had arrived poor little Selby had been rough handled by one of the Golden Retriever puppies. So much so that the second that Sandi would place Selby on the floor the Golden would attack all of the 2 little pounds of her. So much so that the trainer had to break up the fight leaving poor Selby screaming for her little life!

Round One
We arrived in time for the training portion of the class. Hailey indicated that she needed to go outside so off we went. She did her business and we trotted back into class. I picked her up at one point and then... sniff, sniff, sniff... thought to myself what is that smell? I looked down and there was poop all over my arm!

What I didn't notice was that someone how Hailey managed to poop on herself a little bit. Then when I picked her up I got it all over me! I immediately went to the sink to wash up as best I could. If we were at home this task would have been much easier.

The smell still lingering with us... this was going to be a looong class!
Being the stinky state that Hailey was in, no pictures were taken during this class.

Round Two
As soon as we arrived home, all of my clothes went in the washer, Hailey got a bath, and I got a shower. It was great to finally have the stinky stench off of me! I grabbed a drink and a snack and laid down on the love seat pictured below. As you can see Lucie loves this little couch. The second that I laid down I noticed something wet all over the couch. Being a little gun shy at this point I jumped up and looked at the couch. Lucie had thrown up all over the couch, had re-eaten what she had thrown up but couldn't quite get it all from the cracks of the couch. GROSS!!

Instantly disgusted, I freaked out just a little knowing what I had on me then was off to get the cleaning products needed for this mess. Given the size of Lucie, when she throws up it's like a small child throwing up. I didn't realize she could fit so much food in her stomach! Once I had the mess cleaned up I headed to take another shower.

Round Three
On my way to the shower I notice a smell. An all too familiar smell that I found on a Hailey at puppy class tonight. Yes, you guessed it. She pooped in the hall leading to our upstairs shower.

For me this was one of those zen moments where I was not sure what I was going to do.
  1. Run screaming from the house never to return
  2. Spontaneously combust from the overload of this evenings events

I grudgingly excepted my fate and got back to cleaning.

Lessons learned from this evening: Never pick up or sit on anything without reviewing that item and verifying that it is clean!

Pounce Selby Pounce

Our first puppy class was great! We met a lot more puppies. All of them were big puppies except for Hailey and Selby. Since Hailey is nearly 6 months old now, she is the oldest in the group but it is good for her to be around smaller dogs for a little while. Hailey truly did not know what to think of her new friend Selby. I work with Selby's mom and hope that Hailey will make friends with Selby so she has a small friend to play with.

Selby was born on April 28 and is a Toy Poodle.

She is an only pup which has been creating challenges for her mom. We all know about puppy teeth and when they don't have another pup to chew on they go for the humans in their life.

Selby is the cutest thing! She pounces everywhere!

When these pictures were taken Selby had only been home for a few weeks. She had a tight hair cut on her face and she was so very tiny only weighting about a pound and a half.

Here was Selby in puppy class. Her fur is much longer and her little face looks just adorable with her whiskers growing back in. I also love that it looks like she has two big bushy eye brows!

Selby was drawn to a cattle dog mix that is much bigger that she is. From the puppy classes that we have attended, we have noticed that the smallest pup typically falls in love with the largest pup. And they are so cute playing together. I will get move video at the next class.
While we were listening to the trainer, Sandi and I traded puppies for a little bit. I just love how fluffy Selby's fur is. While I was holding her, amazed at her tiny body I noticed a dark mark on her skin. Upon closer inspection I found that it was a tick!!! Because I am terrified of ticks... yeah I'm a big whimp... I immediately showed Sandi and she said "How could she have a tick, she never goes outside?" Selby is an indoor dog and is being trained to potty indoors as well. The tick must have jumped on her from one of her new friends in the class. I called the trainer over who found that the tick had not gotten in the skin yet. I was still holding Selby while Christina the trainer was removing it. Selby hated that because she bit my finger hard. I was reminded of last October when Zoe mistakened my finger for a pupperoni. The good thing is, the tick was removed before it ever bit her. My finger survived just fine.

And then there is Hailey. I was so focused on Selby that I didn't even get one picture of Hailey!  Hailey was her typical self. She introduced herself to all of the adults first, then occasionally visited with a pup or two. She believes she is a veteran since this is her second round in puppy class.  Once the treats came out, forget it! She has a nose on her like you wouldn't believe!

Hailey's cut is finally looking much better! All it needed was time to heal. She still has to wear her shirt because she licks at it the second the shirt comes off, but we are in the home stretch now.

We visited the Rummage for Rescue event on Saturday. There were not a lot of attendees there when we were there but the staff said that the event was very good. We made a donation and got to visit with our friend Peanut. No baths for the girls! They had just had baths the week before.

Puppy Class - Week One
Hailey had her first puppy class this evening. Yes, this is her second round of puppy class. She has only had access to Addie and Lucie and needs to experience more smaller dogs so we signed up again. AND the best thing is our great friend Sandi and her new puppy Selby joined the class too!! Here is a sneak peak of Selby. We will do a full post about Selby in a few days. She is soooo tiny and sweet!!

An overdue visit...

This is how I like to remember Zoe and K-8. Having fun and enjoying their lives.

This Saturday the big girls and I headed out to Smoke Rise Farms. I had not been to see Zoe's headstone since it had been installed and wanted to make sure that it looked good. I had figured that we would hit a lake that was near by for some swimming afterwards.

The second that we stepped into the cemetery, the girls immediately seemed agitated. Addie looked around at some of the headstones and started barking. It was clear that the girls were very uneasy about being here. It's like they knew what this place was. Once they calmed a bit, we headed to see Zoe and K-8.

Zoe's headstone was perfect.

Once I was able to gather myself together, we walked around the cemetery so the girls could stretch their legs. It is about a 45 minute drive to get there. This is the spot where I said my last goodbyes to K-8 and Zoe. I like that you can see their resting place in the distance.
On our walk I was looking at the headstones and wondering about the lives of all of these beloved pets.  Some owners clearly wanted share their furry friends with everyone.

Since we first came here when K-8 died, I have been drawn to this monkey. Wondering about him and the many adventures that you just know that he had. Also, the impact that he had on someones life for them place this beautiful statue of him here. There is no marker just the statue. But it is clear that he was loved.
This family of cats caught my eye. True pet lovers here, indeed.

I just love how you almost get to know them just by reading these. I'm glad they shared them with us.

Just when I thought that I didn't have another tear remaining, I saw this memorial for Abby.

After we said our last goodbyes we headed to blazer. Addie was trying to get in the back of it before the door was even open! And Addie rarely gets into the blazer with out some coaxing. The second I opened the door, Addie immediately jumped in. Lucie following close behind. I know that they did not enjoy their visit very much, but I am glad that they were there with me.

We had Ice Cream Yesterday!

Thank you very much Maggie and Mitch for reminding us that it was national ice cream day yesterday! We used our fun holiday bowls since it was really just like Christmas in July receiving such a wonderful treat.

Each of the girls received a little scoop of ice cream and a mini ice cream sandwich that I created. Hailey was on the clean up crew to make sure that no drop was left behind!

Hailey's Owie Update with the Support of her Sisters

We went back to Family Pet Care today. Hailey needed to have her stitches out and I didn't think that her scratch looked very good. Also, my husband called me at work around 3 p.m. today saying that Hailey keeps throwing up. After a good check from Dr. Johnson, he determined that she just ate something that upset her tummy.
He said her scratch actually was healing fine but that the outer layer of dead skin needed to come off. GROSS!! I don't do well with stuff like this. Dr. Johnson and Melissa removed the dead skin. Hailey screamed a few times... poor baby.
The good news is that her stitches came out and she looks real good from the spay surgery. I received the ok to give her a bath which we did this evening.

Here is Hailey prior to her bath. We are finding out that she enjoys the water.

Here is a very sad Lucie because Hailey is getting all of the attention for the moment.
Don't worry Lucie, your getting a bath this weekend!

Hailey after her bath.

The girls happy together.

WOW... where did that come from?! An unprovoked attack!

Addie took that paw to the face in stride.

Happy together again.

I tried to get all three real quick. Hailey had momentarily forgotten about her owie so I let her stretch her legs without the collar on. But, it did not last for long.
