The Quest for the Best Dog Birthday Cake Recipe

Addie's 1st birthday is quickly approaching and we are in search of the best dog birthday cake recipe. We have purchased premade cakes from a dog bakery, but the cake made both of our dogs sick. Not the best way to spend your birthday.

I have seen some people do a meat birthday cake, but I'm not sure how you do the frosting without it being bad for the dog. If anyone would be willing to share their best dog birthday cake recipe, we would greatly appreciate it. Please post your recipe as a comment to this post that way everyone can benefit from them. We will choose one from the comments that we receive and make it for Addie's birthday on Wednesday.

  1. Oh this one is easy... get your mom to make a meatloaf (beef, oatmeal, eggs) and cook it in cake tins.

Frosting is cream cheese, and the decoration can be with bits of dried apricot (if sweets are your thing) or yellow cheese from a tube (we know... gross... but it works) or ketchup... use your imagination!

    Enjoy!

  3. As part of my business, I make an organic carrot cake with cream cheese icing that is a huge hit. I'd be willing to share the recipe since I only deliver the cakes within a 30 mile radius. My recipe is for a large cake (I make them as giant cupcakes and custom design them per request). Check out my website. If you are interested in the recipe, let me know. www.nibblestreats.com (specialty cakes)

  4. My mom and I would have also suggested khream cheese!

Maybe with a bit of safe peanut butter!

I hope Addie is getting all excited!

  8. We had terrific luck and fun making this home made cake. We like doing the home made thing because there's extra love added to the mix.

Start with softened peanut butter flavor tofutti ice cream (tofu ice cream). You can add in a bit of cream cheese, but not too much cause that might cause a tummy ache. Then, add some chunks of dried liver, chicken or beef (basically pet store treats). Put into bowl and freeze. When somewhat hard, unmold it—it's an upside down sphere shape. For the topping, grind kibble with a morter and pestle so it's kind of powdery and sprinkle it all over the "cake". Then, with kibble, spell out either Happy Birthday, a heart or a name.

  14. Bad mama! She doesn't make cakes for me, but has made cookies with yoghurt frosting (melted yoghurt chips bought online) - dip the doggie cookies into the melt and yum! Or... mama's made doggie cookies with carob frosting too. Maybe that could work for a cake, but not too much frosting - I mean, I could eat a lot of anything if it were available heehe! I never had cream cheese or tube cheese - sounds delish! I'm hungry!

  16. Not sure, but what about whipped egg whites (like on a lemon meringue) used as a "frosting"?

  17. I don't have a recipe but I've heard about the frosting made of mashed potatoes too!

  18. Man! I didn't realize how MISTREATED I have been, until I started reading these blogs a few days ago!!! Someone really needs to take MY Spokesperson aside and give HER some lessons in PROPER DOG CARE!!!

That is such a sweet deal...you're going to actually get a BIRTHDAY cake? Just wait...June 15th will probably come up and my Spokesperson won't even REMEMBER that I was born one year ago on that day.

    ...sigh

  19. Hey, while I'm talkin' to ya...I have a problem... You see, I hang out with this crazy little Border Collie (mix) that is mean as a snake. I mean she really has this whole Napoleonic complex thing going on. You just look cross-eyed at her and she's ready to tear your throat out. (She acts all nicey nice when there are people around, but the moment it's just us dogs, she starts givin' me the evil eye.) See, the thing is, I've been thinkin'...she weighs about 38 pounds and I weigh about 68 pounds...so, the way I have it figured, if I take her on, I ought to win, oughten' I?

What do you think? You bein' a fellow Border Collie (though obviously a much saner, much more reasonable, much better MANNERED one)?

  20. What about using mashed potatoes for the frosting? You can put meat and any veggies they like inside. :) Good luck!

  21. Hi,
Tell you a secret.. instead of using frosting for the cake, our mom uses mashed potato mixed with a bit of plain yoghurt!
Can't wait to see your cake!

  22. You will need:
500gr (1lb) chicken, lamb or beef liver
300ml (1/2 pint) semi skimmed milk
    500gr (1lb) wheat & gluten free flour
    3 tablespoons olive oil
    2 eggs
    2 tablespoons driend parsley

    For the filling and frosting
500gr (1lb) low fat cream cheese or quark
    4 tablespoons olive oil
    2 tablespoons honey
3 unsmoked bacon rashes - grilled and chopped

    To decorate:
    Dog bone biscuits
    Birthday candles

    1. Liquidize the liver and milk in a blender or food processor until smooth. Mix the flour, oil eggs and parsley together in a mixing bowl. Fold the liver puree into the mixture and stir until it forms a smooth paste.

    2. Grease 2 deep 20cm (8 inch) sandwich tins. Divide the liver mixture equally between the tins and bake on the middle shelf of a preheated oven, 180 degrees C (350 degrees F), gas mark 4, for 30-35 minutes. Test to see if it is cooked by inserting a knife into the centre of the cake. If the knife comes out clean, the cake is cooked. Leave to cool.

    3. To make the frosting, beat the cream cheese or quark, oil and honey together until fluffy. Place one of the cake halves upside down on a serving plate. Spread a scant half of the frosting on top and sprinkle with the chopped bacon. Place the second cake half on top of the filling, then spread the remaining frosting over the cake with a spatula.

    4. Decorate with dog bone biscuits and candles.

Store left over cake in the refridgerator for up to 24 hours or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

  24. Hi Addie! I think the birthday cake in your picture looks yumster, but it's probably not good for dogs. My mom has never made a doggie birthday cake, but we're interested in seeing everyone's recipes and how your cake comes out. Happy birthday in advance!

  26. Addie, we recommend you the Meatloaf cake that our Mommy made for us. She has the recipe & she would love to share it with you. If you could pee-mail me, I can give it to you because Mommy already saved it as a draft. BOL! She even listed down the directions on how to make it. The best topping to use is usually non-sweetened yogurt. If you want it to be thicker, add butter or rice flour. That's what our Mommy did for Faith's cake. Rice flour is easily digestible unlike the other flours. The Meatloaf cake can be served cold or warm. We ate it cold & none of us three had any diarrhea. Our poopies came out normal. You must tell your Momma to make this cake or else you'll regret it! Hee!

    Solid Gold Dancer

  35. Hi Staci,

I made Mona's birthday cake from turkey hamburger and oatmeal last year and used instant mashed taters for the icing and then sprinkled little peanut butter dog biscuits on top. We had 2 birthday parties since it stormed on Saturday and half the group couldn't make it so we did another one Sunday.

Happy Birthday in advance Addie. Mona'a birthday/gotcha day is the 19th.

    Sarah and Mona too!!

  36. Hi, Addie,
last year on my 1st birthday mommy made me meatloaf birthday cake with her own recipe:
on 3 spoons of olive oil damped half-kilogram of beef. Cook extra 30dkg tiny macaroni.Mix together and shape in the form of bones. As a glaze you can use a thin layer of fat-free cream cheese and a candle cut out from solid cheese. You can do the inscription from dark chocolate:-)
My mommy didn't use the glase, but I can asure you it was delicious!!
I will e-mail you the picture of it.
    Bon apetit:-)
    love you,
    Nessa
