Lucie's Stitches and Hailey's First Bath

Saturday afternoon we removed the bandages on Lucie's legs. The stitches look great and are healing nicely. Lucie had been leaving her legs alone, until the bandages came off. We only have her wear the e collar when we are not watching her every move. But I discovered something last night. I had put e collar on her. I then watched her reach back around and lick her leg.
Hmmmm... I know that she has long legs but really... now what?!
The vet had said to remove the bandages after 48 hours and to leave them off if everything looked good so that they would heal better. I will continue to place the e collar on her when we go to bed. She is still not use to the collar yet and doesn't move around much when she has it on. When she does move she wakes me up each time so I will know if she is chewing on them. Has anyone had this happen before? I put it on just like it was on her when she first came home after surgery.
A few bloggers had some questions that I thought I would catch up on. Our vet recommended that we spay Lucie between 5 and 6 months old before she goes into her first heat cycle. We always have all of our dogs spayed. I wouldn't have it any other way. Addie was spayed at the same time when she was a pup.
The Great Pyrenees breed has dewclaws. Most owners with litters remove the dewclaws a few days after they are born. It does not hurt them at all when they are this young which is when Addie's were removed. Lucie on the other hand did not have hers removed when she was a pup. To avoid a terrible accident of her getting the dewclaw nail stuck in something and then having it rip out the entire nail, we had the back ones removed.

Hailey is fitting in just fine! She LOVES Addie and Lucie. She chases them across the yard and it is just adorable! They are learning their boundaries with how small she is. I have an exercise pen set up outside in the yard and in her room so she can play with no worries. But she doesn't like to be very far from the big girls now. She slept great last night with only a little crying here and there. Hailey will be 13 weeks old in a few days and weights 4.5 lbs. Compared to Addie's 69 and Lucie's 40 you would think that Hailey would be intimidated by our big girls, but she isn't at all!  I would love to here from other families out there with large and mini dogs on how things run in your house with the size differences. This is new territory for us so we could use all of the advice that we get.

  1. Lucie is just too adorable with her stiches. =) My Grandma has a 80 pound black lab and a 4 pound yorkie. We thought for sure the lab would eat the yorkie when she brought it home. lol. The couple is the funniest thing ever. The little one who is 8 years younger runs the house now. The lab is a little too hyper some times and the yorkie knows when to run and get safe from her. Other than that the yorkie teases the lab constantly and is always licking the lab's face when she can get close enough. We were really surprised at how tolerant the lab is in her old age. a sight to see for sure. =)

  2. Oh my goodness she is adorable! Wow, the size difference is amazing! I cant help you out with how to handle the different sized dogs but with the puppy and my other three full grown dogs I just limit the interaction and make sure I am not setting the puppy up to be crashed into (i.e. throwing the ball and having the puppy standing behind one of the larger dogs). I have to make sure I watch them and know where they are and where they are heading every minute if they are all together. I also correct any rough play and separate them. The bigger dogs are very respectful and careful with the puppy (except Ranger, he is just a big doofus). Also with little pups, if they get injured at this point in their life it can seriously mess up their growth plates - for life. Because of that I take restricting rough play seriously.

I know you guys will do just fine - and I am so happy for you!

  4. Hailey is such a cutie! Our family had a friend who had an Irish Wolfhound and a mini Schnauzer. The Wolfhound was older and had the sweetest disposition in the world and they got along fine. But I think that when the dogs were left at home alone they were kept separated, just to be safe.

    See ya!

  7. Hi Lucie, Addie & now Hailey,

I'm glad to see Lucies stiches are healing very well. I'm glad Hailey is fitting in as well. Pedro and I have never had problems with our different sizes. When we first got him my mom and dad were very careful in training me to be nice and careful around him. If I got a little to rough they would point it out to me and made sure I wouldn't do it again. Hailey probably thinks she is just as big as Lucie and Addie (just like Pedroo probably thinks he's as big as me!). Pedro tends to run our house now, but I just let him. Little dogs have no real concepts at how little they really are! I know if I had to I could put him in his place, but I would never hurt my little brother because I love him so much. I think if things are going this well already with Hailey, Lucie & Addie you have nothing to worry about. I would just make sure they play doesn't get to rough for the little puppy.

  8. How did you get Hailey to take a bath? Any tricks for us? We give Africa treats while we bathe her, but she is so terrified she is not interested in them until after. Hailey is adorable.

  9. Hi puppers! I don't have any advice about small dogs and big dogs because I am a single kitty family. But it looks like you're off to a good start.

I have an award for you on my blog today; please drop by!

  10. I was spayed the day Mommy and Daddy were supposed to pick me up from being rescued. But they did my surgery so late in the day, when Mommy and Daddy got there at 5:30 they said I was still too groggy to go home with them! They had to come back the next day to get me. I didn't even need an ecollar. They just said that some dogs are less likely to be chewers and that they didn't think I would. Lucky for me, I didn't so Mommy never had to go get a silly cone for my head!! GOD! Could you imaging the blackmail pictures!? I am glad Hailey is fitting in good. I am so jealous. Since we don't have a house and are staying with Daddys parents temporarily, I can't have a sister/brother. Daddy was going to get Midge **See here: www(Dot)petfinder(Dot)com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=12119263** for Mommys bday but Gramdpa said no. :( You be so lucky to have two sisters!

  17. hey staci!

manang here, we are so happy with the new addition in your family! it is always a blessing and great joy to have additional dogs in the house!

Aki was already 6 months old when we brought Poopie to be with us permanently. At first, we were quite apprehensive because we thought that they would not hit it off, considering Aki's sheer size as opposed to her. (Aki is 36.5 kg vs. Poopie at 3 kg). We found though, that Aki had a strong brotherly instinct and Poopie gravitated to him as would a baby sister.

Overall, they have become really great chums, from sharing their day cage, food bowls, water bowls, and even toys. I would suggest you look out for the occassional rough playing though. With Aki, his forever puppy disposition would sometimes irritate Poopie, but glad to say they never had once broke out into a puppy fight. :D

i trust the two big sisters are very well behaved and well mannered girls. they will surely enjoy the company of their new sister. again, congratulations!! we are so happy for you!

    lots of love,

    manang micchi

  19. That picture of Hailey is too cute for words!

We often have the problem of dealing with preventing Tom from licking his legs after he injures his stop-pad or pawpad. One thing the vet here recommended is a natural antiseptic made with thyme, that you just spray on the wound. Dogs don't like the smell of thyme and so will (you hope!) leave it alone.

  20. Lucie, you gotta stop licking your leg or else it won't heal fast & that thing will stay on you for a longer time. Be a good girl. Awww, just look at Hailey's face! She looks so sad after her bath. Hehe!

Well, Chloe was spayed around that time too. It wasn't my hoomans who spayed her. It was her previous owners who did. Chloe was adopted. So comparing Chloe(the spayed one) to us two(we are not spayed yet), she is fat no matter what you do. Cut down the food intake, exercise alot, whatever, she is still fat. She had to be on slimming pills for a few months. It did help a bit eventually but after that, boom! She went back up the moment my hoomans stopped giving her the pills. Her hips & boobies are not developed. Faith & I got hips. We have feminine figures. Chloe's is small like the males. Her thighs are kinda sunken too like there's hardly any muscles in them despite all the exercise she's been getting everyday. Chloe is tired all the time. Eventhough she is fat, she is pretty agile but play with her for 5 minutes, & she's done. Where else me, I got lots of energy, I'm never tired, I eat whatever I want & I don't put on weight so easily nor does Faith. I lose weight easily without any effort too. My hoomans always believe that a dog should only be spayed atleast after 1st or 2nd heat or even better, after 4 years old. There is no rush. If the dog is not going to bred, it should be spayed after the 2nd heat. Mixed breeds & mongrels must be spayed because they cannot be allowed to breed but it depends on the owner, when they want to spay their dogs. Everybody have different opinions & this is just my hoomans'.

Our friend's miniature Poodle just got spayed few months back & she has already put on 1kg within one month & that's a lot for a small dog! That's like me putting on 5 kg in one month!!! The owner is still feeding her dog the same amount since before she got spayed. She has another Poodle & she is still slim as ever because she's not spayed. This thing about putting on weight does not happen to all dogs but majority, yes. So that's the only problem with spaying. That's why my hoomans aren't gonna spay the female they are going to keep till after 2 years old.

Anyway, I think I talked too much here. We hope Hailey is doing very well in her new home!

  21. Wow, Lucie must be some kind of contortionist to reach that far to get her legs. :) Hope they heal fast. And Hailey is so cute after her bath...well, and so far in all of the pictures I have seen of her. I bet she will be the one running the show in no time. :)
