Last night on one of our trips outside, I saw the mother squirrel with her little baby looking out. It was almost as if she was showing her little sweetie off for us to see!
This evening we saw the mother squirrel feeding one of the baby squirrels.

We can see that there are at least 2 babies inside the house.

In the second video the baby squirrel is exploring its home. My concern, right along with the mother squirrel, is that the babies may fall out. I see that the mother squirrel blocks the hole with her head when she is in the nest, but I still worry and so does my husband. So I called our vet, Family Pet Care, for some guidance. I spoke with our friend Melissa and she said that if any of the babies fall out that it is possible that the mother will retrieve them. Melissa said that their are rescue groups out there that raise baby squirrels if the mother does not. What I didn't realize is that you can be fined $2,000 if you try to raise a baby squirrel yourself.
I located information from the DFW Wild Life Coalition on what to do if you find a baby squirrel. It is very interesting if you like learning about squirrels. I had no idea that squirrels had backup houses and that they can build a new nest in a matter of hours.
It is my hope that the squirrels will stay in their home until they are old enough to make it on their own. But, if something happens we will be contacting a mammal rehabilitator to step in.
The girls are sort of oblivious to what is going on in the tree above them.
They are too busy playing and having fun!
I bet Hailey knows they are there!

This is so disturbing. You've all been brainwashed somehow. An intervention is being planned.
ReplyDeleteWe rarely see a squirrel anywhere near our yard, but it is nice to know that they at least have one redeeming quality - she is a very good and protective mother.
