All of our participants are very hard at work trying to shed those pounds. With all the rain that we have had, playing outside has left us with lots of baths and a lot of walks around the neighborhood which leads me directly to our...

The Leave It Command
I have learned firsthand how important this command is. I have worked a little on this with Addie, but we really need to focus on it now. With cutting back on Addie's dog food everything sounds like a good treat!
While we were on one of our walks, Addie came across a chicken bone that someone left on the side of the road. Ron said Addie has something in her mouth. I grabbed her mouth and tried to pry it open and she swallowed the two inch long bone whole!
Then panic set in. We were a little over half a mile from home, so I decided to call our vet as soon as we got there. About half way home, Addie threw that bone right up along with her dinner. WOOOOHOOO! I have never been so happy to see her throw up EVER! She was perfectly fine, but no more road treats for her!
I subscribe to Bark magazine and in the May/June issue one of the articles is on the leave it command.
Here is a video of the command from their web site.

Once upon a time my sibster Kyrye snagged a dead skhwirrel - she would NOT give it up drop it let go leave it ETC!
ReplyDeleteMom said they finally pried her jaws open and retrieved it!

Khyra
I too would have swallowed it whole especially if mom was trying to take it away. =) We have been doing better this week, and am keeping track of my progress on my new board.
ReplyDeleteoh my.. we cant help but react to khyra's story.. oooo... im feeling a little woozy already..
ReplyDeletethat was a scary story addie. i hope you won't do it again. swallowing a 2-inch bone is just way to scary. you might scar your throat.
were so fortunate that the most common things that Aki tends to find during her walkies are bits of rice.. nevertheless, food given outside our home is a definite no no..
be good!

Ah yes! We love the leave it command. It is so fabulous to be able to stop Africa from eating something of value when my hands our tied with our little baby boy. I also love drop it!

Thank dogness Addie was fine. Those road side treats can cause quite a bit of trouble.
ReplyDeleteGlad Addie is okay - yikes!
ReplyDeleteDamn Addie! Tell your Mum to give you a treat or something! Don't g eating bones off the side of the road!
ReplyDeleteI am doing better this week. Mum shaved me, so hopefully that will take off a few pounds BOL

Mommy says i am a true Terrier unlike my brothers - i catch stuff all the time and eat it - Mommy feeds us raw so i am just helping myself. Most recently I snagged a Possum on Sunday and my Favorite yesterday a SKUNK. Mommy wouldnt let me in the living room after that one.

I had to learn the "leave it" command to get my therapy dog license. My girl told me that it's to keep us dogs from grabbing pills or other things that are bad for us that could be dropped in a nursing home or hospital. A chicken bone would be a lot of temptation though.

#1 agrees that "Leave it" is one of the most important commands there is. Tommy is pretty good about it as a whole. We said "pretty"...
ReplyDeleteWe both know the leave it command. Mummy shouted it this morning just as we found a nice dead rabbit to play with on our walk.

phew, glad nothing bad came of it. Auntie Penny be terrible with leave it. If she pick up something dangerous she will not let go. Mum even has to tip her over and wiggle her legs about until she let it go.
ReplyDeleteBOL!

Hey Addie! Thanks for visiting my blog. I love your colors, b & w very classy.
ReplyDeleteI'm not letting my humans see your blog 'cause they want me to do too much as it is.
Ahhh yes but the problem with Nala and that command is she is too smart and only obeys it when it is "training" time but if she has a special treat she knows she isn't supposed to have then it is like she has lost the ability to hear. :)
ReplyDeleteOh my... that sure gave us a scare!! Glad she vomitted it out...
ReplyDeleteMy Mommy was watching that video, even though I already know the command but now she wants to retech it! OH NO! Hailey is such a cutie! Also I'm so sorry about Tucker. I know y'all loved him very much.

Hi Addie!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like your doing a good job so far with your biggest loser competition! I know the leave it command and the drop it command! But last week I found something yummy on the floor and when Owner Girl said "drop it" I gobbled it up instead!
