The Producers
Being pet lovers, we all have first hand experience with this topic. Being that this is the first time that we have had two big dogs, we are realizing just how much poop they make. Truthfully, I don't know how Lucie can produce the large amount that she does!
How do you manage the poop in your yard?
We have tried the following:
Garbage bag: other animals get into it or rip open the closed bag
Mini bucket with lid: In this heat if you leave it too long, well I'm not even going to say what happens, but at that point I throw out the entire bucket with lid attached
Digging holes: This is straight from my husbands military background. Our grass grows great over those holes!
We have not tried the Doggie Dooley system. Do any of you use it and if so is it good for large dogs? Any advise that you can provide will be greatly appreciated. We pick all poop up immediately so our solution needs to include some type of storage. For all of our friends that are in hot climates, we would love to hear how you manage your yard. We are hoping to find a solution that will reduce the smell and flys.
We pick up daily and it's put in a closed bucket with a liner. We did buy a Doggie Dooley when we first bought the house but then realized that our lot is clay - nowhere for it to be absorbed into.
ReplyDeleteCheckers poop is SMALL and formed - we pick it up and flush it down the toilet. He only poops on a deck so it's easy - we spend a lot of time washing the deck tho!
ReplyDeleteAh poop, not a good subject at my house. Sometimes I do them in the house and I don't know why but my Mom gets so mad at me. For the most part mine are pretty small and I do them on walks or on the deck so they get flushed like Checkers. I have friends 2 houses away, Rocky(ST.Bernard) and Freckles(Great Dane) and their Mom has someone come and take the poop away and they like it very much, some kind of service place.Poop in peace

I've used the doggie dooley in the past and it's a great product. I hated leaving it when I moved. Now I am back to the ol' poop in a bag plan. I don't have the problem of anything ripping the bag, because there is only the poop in that bag.
ReplyDeleteWe double bag it in doggie poo bags and then put it into our garbage bin (which is a very large strong plastic bin with a heavy lid) so no animals can get into it. It's collected every week by the binmen and then we clean it out with Jeyes Fluid (strong disinfectant) to keep it from smelling.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Clive gets two large tablespoons of natual yogurt mixed in with his dry food every evening which makes his poo a lot easier to pick up - always nicely formed - and less smelly. He has also been trained to go in the same spot in the garden which also makes it a lot easier - we always know exactly where his poo will be.

We have a large yard so mom picks up and relocates our poop with the grass clippings. Mom couldn't help but laugh at your posting because you never think of the additional poop when you want to add another doggie to your family - only the vet bills and the food!
ReplyDeleteLove ya lots,
Maggie and Mitch
We have a big compost bin that all the poop and other organic waste goes into

I rarely poop in my yard. Only in the winters, when we can't go on long walks or to the park, where mom just picks up the poop with baggies. Plus, I don't poop much as it is.... Except multiple times at the park, tiny little piles that make it impossible for mom to find! BOL
ReplyDeleteWe currently do mini bucket with liner and lid and it's been an okay system. I also wanted to do the Doggie Dooley system but our lot is also mostly clay, so that wouldn't work.
ReplyDeletePoop happens!
ReplyDeleteBOL!!!

I used to poop near the house and the humans would pick it up and put it in the trash. Now I've said this before, if you don't have a pile out there you don't exist.
ReplyDeleteSo now I poop far from the house (but still on my property) and never in the same place twice. Some times the humans find it when they are on the large loud grass shortening machines and it sticks in the tires. (*snark*) Then they spread it around for me and I get like a hundred spots outta one pile!
My sister, the pig, poops in the same place and they pick it up and put it in a bucket with a lid so I don't eat it. When they take the lid off to put more in they gag like they gotta hair ball stuck in their throat.

Well, I am obviously not large, but this is what Old Girl does for my poops. She just scoops and tosses in the regular trash--taking it out frequently. Also, though, we live in an apartment, so the trash-dynamics are perhaps different in a regular house. :P Good luck, and stay cool in this Texas heat!
ReplyDeleteAh, the great poop debate. We tried the doggie dooley system and it worked great for one dog, but not so much for two. We also have clay soil and it could not absorb fast enough with the additional poo. They do make bigger systems though which are great if you have sandy soil and could probably handle the two dog poop problem.
ReplyDeleteNow we bag some of it up, and use some to fill holes around the yard to deter re-digging there. I just put it in the large city supplied bins which go out once a week so the gross-out smell factor doesn't get that bad.
w00f's Moco, got a pooper thingy last summer, me not sure if it works good or not...if u need her bloggy lemme no..

Steve and Kat have a Doggy Dooley - do you know them? Washington Woos. Check our sidebar!
ReplyDeleteOur bipeds pick up as soon as we poop. It gets sealed in baggies, then put in a plastic container with a lid. It's weighted down with kitty litter - for our winds. That helps control odor until trash pick up day.

I was going to suggest what the Army of Four did - ask Steve and Kat about the doggy dooly system as they have one. They are two larger dogs so it would be worth checking out.
ReplyDeleteI of course only use my litter box.

You might try putting each unit of doggy doo in its own little baggie (like the kind you take on walks), then putting the little baggies into a bucket or small trash can. Or just toss the little baggies right into the big outdoor can like I do. I know what you mean about the Texas heat... to be honest, I haven't pooper scooped for a week cause there's just no way I'm going to spend that much time outside! :P
