Lucie Update: Another Doctor

By Monday Lucie refused eat dog food of any kind so we have moved to people food. Low fat ground meats and rice or mini noodles. After speaking with her specialist we have stopped the Tetracycline and niacinamide because he said of side effect could be loss of appetite. I was told that once she starts eating well to get her back on dog food and then we will start the same meds again but slow this time.

My concern is that she is not much better since we started all of this. We are almost at 2 months into her not feeling well and I have been worried that something is being missed. So, he sent us to an internal medicine specialist. We went to see Ms. Pickens today at Veterinary Medicine Specialists in Grapevine, TX. If any of our readers is familiar with this doctor or this place I would love to talk to you.

My first impression, EXPENSIVE! You can always tell by the look of the building and then the decor of the lobby. Ms. Pickens examined Lucie and didn't find anything out of the ordinary except that her back lymph nodes are a little enlarged. Today they did blood work which was all normal. They took a sample from the lymph node and although she didn't find anything glaring she wanted to send it to the pathologist to review. She did find something abnormal from the urine test which she said could be leading to something so they are doing an additional urine protein test.

The doctor pretty much talked circles around me. I maybe understood every 5th word she said. Basically, I don't know any more now than I did before the appointment. I am glad that her blood work was normal, especially for the liver and kidneys. Hopefully these two additional tests will not show anything major. She did throw cancer and Addison's Disease around so I pray that it is neither of those. The doctor did give me a list of additional tests with costs that they want do if anything is suspect in these results.

Neither Lucie or I got a warm and fuzzy feeling from this staff. The doctor had not reviewed any of her information that had been provided before the appointment. Since they were only doing blood work and those two other tests which didn't take long, I chose to stay with Lucie in the waiting room for the results instead of putting her through the stress of being alone in a strange kennel. They didn't like this much but my first concern is Lucie's happiness. If that means me sitting with her in the waiting room so she can relax, so be it. As always, she made some new friends that were visiting the clinic.

Lucie relaxing in the waiting room.

Hailey was very happy to see Lucie come home!
She has been watching over her this afternoon.

  2. We are thinking of Lucie and keeping her in our thoughts. I can certainly understand your thoughts on the doctor. The oncologist we were referred to when Domi's cancer was discovered was nice but it was like he spoke another language. I got to the point where I just put my faith (and money) in him and hoped he knew what was best for her. I didn't understand any thing he said about the cancer or the treatment. We at least got a couple of years with her that we might not have so it was worth it. Hopefully you'll have a diagnosis and a treatment soon.

I'm sorry you're having to go through this, and particularly Lucie. Hailey is always right there to lend her support and be a little nurse. We hope you get some definitive answers soon.

  14. The most important thing is for you to find out exactly where the problem lies and what can be done about it. We fail to understand, however, why some vets don't seem to feel hat being kind is part of their job...

  15. We are very sad to hear that Lucie is still not well.

I am a bit of a professional at going to the vet. I do not like what you describe of this place.

I asked my human but we do not know anything of Texas so the thought is is there a University nearby that has a vet school? This might be a good place to take Lucie where the Drs. will be more concerned with learning than impressing.

  20. We are so sorry that this is still an issue for Lucie. We were going to tell you what Khyra said, Addison's isn't a horrible thing - it can be controlled by medication. Do you have access to a veterinary university near you at all? That is another good source for veterinary care by the best. They often seem to be able to find the answers that seem so elusive to others. Paws crossed and prayers for some good news for that little sweetheart.

    Hugs, the OP Pack

  21. Oh, Lucie. What is wrong with you? It must be frustrating to be a dog sometimes.

Our Christmas wish for you is that Lucie gets all better! Just some idea of what the problem is would be nice, huh?

Thinking of you guys - and we love the pictures of Hailey watching over Lucie. It's so sweet. She is clearly in good hands (and paws).

  22. We too are sorry. I say go with your gut on your feeling about the vet. Sorry I am not familiar with that one. If it was me, I would try to get a referral from your regular vet to Texas A&M's clinic.(If this does not start resolving itself very soon) It isn't that far a drive and is where I will go if ever I feel I have to find an answer for one of my pup's. Hopefully she'll get a Christmas Miracle and be on the mend soon. We will pray and howl to heaven for her.
The dogtur we use went to A&M and stays in contact with alot of folks down there. Maybe a visit with him,(his website can be accessed if you click on "our dogtur" on the bloggy sidebar) taking all results you have and see what he thinks? Email me if you want to discuss it. Don't want to give phone number on here.
    Hugs
